Lynne, a retired English teacher, has been a volunteer in Crafts since 2010.

I was looking for something different and local to do when I retired from teaching. I had visited Brunswick as a customer over the years and although I had no experience of working with people with a learning difficulty I felt I had something to offer as craft has always been a hobby.

Alan is the member of staff who runs the craft group. He has very high standards for what we produce but is infinitely patient with everyone and very skilled. He has encouraged me to develop new skills such as weaving. In turn I have supported Michelle and David (and more recently Paul) in crafts for the last 8 years. They have always been very warm and welcoming towards me, I feel as we’ve built a great rapport and can have fun whilst we work.

I always tell people that I go home with a smile on my face as it’s such a positive, relaxed and happy environment. It is so satisfying to be able to help people who really appreciate the support you offer (not always my experience as a teacher!)

Recently I was poorly and not able to volunteer for a few months. Brunswick kept in touch and sent a get well card. It made a difference to know I was missed!

If you want to do something that cheers you up and makes you smile then Brunswick is the ideal place to come. There is plenty of support and encouragement to develop in your volunteering role.
