Lord Mayor Visits Brunswick by Rachel Jones The Civic party visited Brunswick on Monday 21 May for the morning. The party included The Rt Hon the Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Barbara Boyce; the Lady Mayoress, Mrs Valerie Clark; the Sheriff of York, Mrs Gillian Brian; and the Sheriff’s Consort, Mrs Anne Bush They were welcomed by Director Sadie, member of staff Rachel, and Tim M, one of our workers. They enjoyed tea and coffee and delicious apple and blackberry cake baked by our cooking group, whilst chatting to workers and staff on their break in the mess room. Deborah was very pleased to be introduced to the party and Sandy was very impressed by the chains - she would have liked to have tried them on! There was a touching moment when the Lady Mayoress, Val and one of our workers, John recognised each other. Val has known John since he was tiny and was delighted to see him at work at Brunswick. We then went down to the vegetable garden where the civic party presented a gift of a golden spade to Brunswick. Daniel proudly received the spade on behalf of our gardening groups and then started using it straight away, much to the civic party’s delight! The civic party were then given a tour of the site by our workers Tim M and Emma. The glorious sunshine meant the always beautiful Brunswick gardens were looking at their best. The party were very impressed by the productivity of the land, how healthy the crops were and the quality of the organic compost being produced. They were genuinely interested in the range of quality crafts being made in the crafts workshop. The group was busy pressing flowers that would be used to make cards and confetti, and producing brass rubbing style wrapping paper. They admired our woven and rag rugs. Sandy very proudly showed off her incredible rag rugs that she has made. The tour ended at the shop where purchases of crafts and plants were made by all! Brass rubbing wrapping paper a top seller having seen it being so expertly produced! It was a pleasure to host the civic party and we hope they enjoyed their visit.
