Brunswick social club
|
The workers at Brunswick who have learning difficulties have also set up a social club to support members to get out in the evenings and at weekend. The social club is run by people with learning difficulties for people with learning disabilities. The social club exists because there are many barriers to people with learning difficulties ‘joining in like everybody else' in every day life. The social club is there to offer support when needed and to help people to support each other. Activities include: Trips to the theatre/ shows/concerts; walks in the countryside; drama workshops; bird-watching; cooking; participating in sports and going to football matches/ cricket; going to the pub; fundraising events like bingo and gigs. Please note: events and activities are constantly changing. We plan things on an individual basis and depending what social events are on offer in York.
The Social Club Committee: Robin, Tristam, Phil, Chris, Michelle & Brian "Freedom, Friends and Fun are things anybody would like in their lives. What that looks like is different from person to person. We believe that people should get the chance to do what they want to do. We, people with learning difficulties, are in the same boat, because we don't always get to choose and we don't always get the support we need. The social club is there to offer support and to help people to support to each other. We believe that people who are facing the same difficulties are the best people to help others with those difficulties. This is not easy. We ask for help when we get stuck. We choose who is helping us to break down barriers. This gives us confidence. There are lots of people with disabilities who haven't got the opportunities to find out what they like and what makes them happy. We, at the social club, create some opportunities so that people can try out new things. We reach out to people to make them feel comfortable and encourage them to join in like everybody else. We want to put a stop to people feeling lonely. We want other people to notice us and to join in with the fun! That is what the social club is all about."
Brunswick's Social Club operates on a very small scale and we do not have the funding at the moment to ensure that we can offer the support that every individual might need. We are open to everybody who shares an interest in any of the activities we do. If you are quite independent, or have people in your life who support you with social arrangements, then there are a number of different activities you might want to check out. We are very happy to work with people with learning difficulties and their PA's or other paid staff or families to join in with our events. The social club is very aware that transport is a big issue for many people. We are limited in how much we can help with this due to funding, but we try wherever we can. The Social Club is based at York CVS, 15 Priory Street, York tel 01904 675947 (we are not in the office every day but you can leave an answerphone message and we will return your call as soon as possible) Contact the social club by email at socialclub@brunswickyork.org.uk |
